Family-friendly events in Gippsland this June

Keeping the kids entertained over the weekends and school holidays can require some creative thinking.

🎉 The Monitor has compiled a collection of family-friendly events across Gippsland this June.

Winter Wonderland Christmas Disco

Open to children aged 5 to 13, this is a Christmas-themed disco hosted by the Bairnsdale Scouts.

Ticket cost: $5 for children or $10 for a family.

When: Friday June 6.

Where: Bairnsdale Scout Hall, 26 Grant Street, Bairnsdale.

The Great Alpine Scarecrow Competition

A collection of Alpine scarecrows.

This event encourages East Gippsland locals, families, schools, businesses and community groups to build imaginative scarecrows and display them proudly throughout the region.

When: Friday June 19 - Sunday July 12.

Where: Entire East Gippsland Region

Mallacoota Winter Solstice Exhibition

A painting at the Mallacoota Winter Solstice Exhibition.

Set over the winter solstice, this exhibition at MA Space Gallery in Mallacoota includes an immersive sound and light installation and arts and crafts workshop.

When: Friday June 19 - Sunday June 21.

Where: MA Space Gallery, 66 Maurice Avenue, Mallacoota

Bruthen Medieval Winter Fire Festival

Fire sword displays at the Bruthen Medieval Winter Fire Festival.

Locals and visitors are encouraged to dress up in medieval themes and take part in outdoor ancient family games, indoor games and watch sword fighting demonstrations and medieval skills demonstrations.

The event also showcases fire pots, the slaying of a dragon, bonfire lighting, heaps of colourful lanterns lighting the fences, music and medieval dances.

Ticket price: $15 for adults and children can enter for free.

When: Saturday June 20.

Where: The Paddock (behind Bruthen Mechanics Hall), 49 Main Street, Bruthen.

LitterArty

One person’s trash is another person’s art.

An event that aims to teach children creativity and the importance of keeping the waterways clean. 

Take a stroll along the Lakes Entrance foreshore and pick up discarded packaging, lolly papers, tossed bottles and cans (safety equipment is provided) and then turn the litter you collect into art.

Ticket price: Free.

When: Saturday June 20 at 12:30pm and Sunday June 21 at 4pm.

Where: Lakes Entrance Footbridge, 591 Esplanade, Lakes Entrance.

Echo Bend Camping Park Lantern Making

Hand-made lanterns around a tree at Echo Bend Camping Park.

Learn how to make creative and funky lanterns at the scenic Echo Bend Camping Park.

Ticket price: $5.

Where: Echo Bend Camping Park,Glenaladale.

Krowathunkooloong Keeping Place Twilight Tours

Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Co-Op.

Led by local Indigenous leaders, this tour guides guests through the Keeping Place in Bairnsdale. The leaders will tell stories, share knowledge, artefacts and lived histories.

When: Thursday June 25.

Where: Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Co-Op, 37-53 Dalmahoy Street, Bairnsdale.

Bush Picnic, Stroll & Art in the Heart of Lake Tyers Beach

Crafting art from found objects in the bush.

Children of all ages are invited to join a guided wander through natural bushland with locals who will help identify flora, fauna and fungi.

After the walk, children can paint, draw, make art and decorate objects they find along the walk.

When: Tuesday June 30.

Where: Lake Tyers Beach.
