July gig guide: the best live music to see in Gippsland this month
A Fleetwood Mac cover band, folk singers and a traditional harp player are all performing at local venues.

There’s plenty of live music and fun to be had this July in Gippsland, including NAIDOC week events and the East Gippsland Winter Festival. Here’s our list of the best live music shows this month.

Running in the Shadows of Fleetwood Mac

Emily Sanzaro Harp Concert

Emily Sanzaro blends traditional and contemporary classical music with genres like jazz and Celtic.
She has undertaken three solo residencies at Hobart's MONA and released her debut album Awaken in 2021

Todd Cook & The Rufous Whistlers Album Launch

Todd Cook & The Rufous Whistlers.
As part of the East Gippsland Winter Festival, Todd Cook & The Rufous Whistlers will be launching its sixth album Heal Plant Grow at Bruthen Mechanics Hall. With double bass, drums and violin from The Rufous Whistlers, Todd Cook will bring his emotive lyrics and folk fingerpicking style to the stage. They will also be joined by guests Olivia Lay and the Alleycats Community Choir.

Wonthaggi Acoustic Music Festival

Friday Evening: Opening the festival with Strat and Lyndal, John Flanagan Band.
Saturday afternoon: Tracey Miller ACDC, Karavana Flamenca, Argentinian Band, Smiley-Doherty.
Saturday Evening: Bass Coast Pickers and return of Golden Guitar winners The Davidson Brothers.
Sunday: Gospel singing workshop, local bands and open mic.

Birdz and Fred Leone

Birdz and Fred Leone.
Touring their new EP Girra (meaning fire in the Butchulla language), Birdz and Fred Leone use their music to pay homage to their traditional language, roots and identity.
Both artists hail from Ngulungbura Clan of the Butchulla Nation, and you can expect a high energy show with Indigenous lyrics mixed with dance music and hip hop.

Kingswood - The Midnight Mavericks tour

Two members of Kingswood.
Kingswood formed in Melbourne in 2007 and since then have been nominated for an ARIA Award and four Golden Guitars. The band’s latest release is a reimagining of Tom Petty’s You Wreck Me. Kingswood will be performing plenty of classic covers ranging from heartland rock to country soul.

Uncle Kutcha Edwards

Kutcha Edwards.
Kutcha Edwards will be performing as part of the first Ngangga NAIDOC Celebration on Millowl (Phillip Island).
Edwards is a former member of the 1990s band Blackfire.
His 2021 album Circling Time combines ethereal melodies with classic country music and his lyrics highlight the stories of Indigenous Australians.

Conrad Sewell - Firestone 10th Anniversary

Hitting the road 10 years after he put his lyrics to Kygo’s hit Firestone, Conrad Sewell is undertaking an acoustic tour with guest Rene Le Feuvre.
Celebrating the international multi-platinum hit Firestone, Sewell will bring an intimate acoustic session to the Berninneit on Phillip Island. Expect to hear his other hits like Start Again as well.

Stiff Gins

Stiff Gins is Wiradjuri/Yorta Yorta woman Kaleena Briggs and Yuwaalaraay woman Nardi Simpson. The group’s sound incorporates country ballads with styles including funk and dance. The pair will be performing songs from Stiff Gins’ fourth studio album Crossroads.
