The Powlett River/Kugerungmome Estuary spans about 50,800 hectares as it flows from the Strzelecki Ranges around Korumburra down to its exit point on Williamson’s Beach.

When water is unable to exit the estuary, it pools on the low-lying farmland around Wonthaggi, making it all but impossible to farm.
