The Victorian Labor government has pledged $5 million to upgrade Wonthaggi's Bass Coast Secondary College TAFE campus if re-elected at the state election later this month.

What campus? The government said the campus will offer more health and construction courses and be built by 2029.

The promise is part of a $70 million election promise to upgrade two TAFE campuses in Bendigo and Wonthaggi, and build a new campus in Dandenong.

  • Under the plan the Bendigo campus will get $20 million to establish a Clean Economy Hub to train tradies in renewable energy industries.

  • At Chisholm’s Dandenong campus $45 million will go towards a new Home Building Centre, which will train construction apprentices.

Minister for Skills and Training Gabrielle Williams said in a statement: “We’ll deliver two new TAFE campuses so young people in the north and west can get the training they need for the career they want.”

Coalition response: The Liberal candidate for Bass Rochelle Halstead told the Monitor instead of funding TAFE her party would look at reintroducing technical colleges in Victoria and build one in Bass.

  • What’s the difference? TAFE is a government-run public institution whereas a technical college is a privately owned organisation.

Under the Coalition’s plan, 10 new technical colleges will be built around the state at an estimated cost of $222 million over eight years.
