🦜 Would you buy an island to save a bird?

Golden wattles are in bloom, businesses want less pollution and I try to outpace an AFL player.

⏱️ This edition of our newsletter is a six-minute read.

👋 Hey Gippslanders, it’s Jacob here.

In this week’s newsletter we’re talking about the conservation of Corner Inlet islands and Australian businesses calling for a stronger pollution reduction target, and we’ve got plenty of event lists for you to check out.

🤧 I was off sick towards the end of last week, which is why there was no Friday newsletter for the Gippsland Monitor. I hope you all had a great flu-free weekend.

🌼 Feeling a little better by Saturday afternoon, I went for a walk with my girlfriend along the Rokeby to Noojee Trail. Golden wattles were in full bloom, which made for a picturesque stroll.

🎤 This week I spoke to Steve Enticott from the not-for-profit Nooramunga Land & Sea. The group recently purchased a second island property in Corner Inlet, which they will rehabilitate to protect the native environment and wetland for future generations.

🦆 Enticott told me that aside from protecting native birds and animals, the site helps buffer the coastline from storm surges, improves water quality, nurtures fish nurseries and helps regulate the climate by storing carbon in the mangroves.

We're all very much driven with the same mindset - this is a critical habitat, it's got to be protected. We all put our hands in our pockets and purchased the island, and that's how we all came together.

Australian companies have come up with innovative ways to tackle pollution reduction, from a company that produces low emissions paint to a concrete company that has developed a way to capture fossil fuel emissions in concrete.

“Business owners are ultimately people, and they're aware of the broader environmental costs, the economic harm, the social harm of failing to take action on climate change,” Christina Hobbs, General Manager of Advocacy at Future Group, told the Gippsland Monitor.

Supreme Court Judge Justice Christopher Beale has sentenced Erin Patterson to life in prison, with a non-parole period of 33 years.

For decades a 72-hectare patch of island in Corner Inlet was used as farmland, but in March an opportunity arose to protect the property’s significant wetlands for future generations.

The director of not-for-profit Nooramunga Land & Sea, Steve Enticott, told the Gippsland Monitor the group was approached by the owner of the Bullock Island property early this year about purchasing the land.

Nooramunga Land & Sea was founded by Gippsland conservationists Karl Just, Jim Phillipson and Enticott in 2022, when they purchased a property on Little Dog Island for environmental protection. That site is neighbouring the recently-purchased wetlands site.

“We're all very much driven with the same mindset - this is a critical habitat, it's got to be protected,” said Enticott. “We all put our hands in our pockets and purchased the island, and that's how we all came together.”

The group now has a dozen volunteers.

Enticott said the Bullock Island owner knew the land was an important native habitat and was eager to see its environment conserved.

🎥 WATCH: Are you faster than Jai Newcombe? 🏃🏻‍♂️

👟 When I moved to Poowong at the beginning of the year I noticed that Hawthorn’s Jai Newcombe had recorded a bunch of Strava records in the town. I decided to test my speed against an AFL young gun; check out the video I made about it below.

Thanks for catching up with us this week at the Gippsland Monitor. I hope you enjoyed the midweek issue of our newsletter. I’ll be back in your inbox on Friday morning.
