Former Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said on Friday she is quitting politics and will not stand at the November election.

Allan entered parliament in 1999 as the state’s youngest ever female MP. She replaced Daniel Andrews as premier in September 2023 and was ousted last month by Ben Carroll. She held 16 ministries.

What she said: Allan told reporters she “didn’t waste a day” during her time in parliament.

“With each day, I lived the values outlined in my first speech to parliament - quality investment in public health and education, a strong union movement, respect for other people and the role of community in decision making.”

What about the seat? A new Labor candidate for Bendigo East will need to be selected.

The current candidates for the seat are Andrew Lethlean (Nationals), Michael Tolhurst (Greens) and Denali Norsen (Victorian Socialists).
