Results and top point scorers from round eight of Gippsland United’s basketball games

Women's and men's teams went up against Coburg Power over the weekend.

Both Gippsland United squads took a trip to the northern Melbourne suburbs over the weekend to face off against Coburg Power. Both games came down to the wire.

Division Two Women’s Team

In a nail-biting performance the United side came away with the win against Coburg Power, beating them by three points. 

Things were not looking good for United after the first quarter, with the Power leading 24-12. Gippsland showed their mental toughness and stayed focused on the job at hand, winning the next three quarters and coming away with the victory.

Alahna Arnason was United’s highest scorer with 17 points. Shantelle Thorburn was the second highest scorer, with 14 points, including two three-pointers.

United is in third place in division two with six wins and three losses. They face off against the second place Wallan Panthers this Saturday (May 24) at Wallan’s Robson Stadium.

Division One Men’s Team

Round eight saw the top two teams in Basketball Victoria’s Division One Men’s competition go head to head. Gippsland United and Coburg Power had each recorded seven wins and no losses going into their match at Coburg Basketball Stadium on Saturday.

United outscored the Power in the first quarter 25-17 and stayed competitive in the second quarter (22-24). Things took a bad turn for Gippsland in the second half, however, with United losing the third quarter 10-16. In the end United just couldn’t get over the Coburg Power, losing the game 72-79.

Jalin Wimberly was United’s top scorer with 20 points, shooting 7/18 from the field with two three-pointers in the mix. Riley Morehu put away 14 points - including two three-pointers - for United, shooting 40 percent from the field. 

United will face off against the winless Warrnambool at the Seahawks stadium on Saturday (May 24).
