⏱️ Your Gippsland local news hit in under six minutes.
👋 Hey Gippsland, it’s Jacob here with your midweek newsletter.
This week we’re talking about protecting native koala habitat and September events, and I asked locals what the most difficult thing was about living in Gippsland.
🎊 I’ve been busy compiling an assortment of September event lists to help you find fun local entertainment, markets and shows to occupy your weekends. I’ve finished a general what’s on list, a comprehensive farmers market list, a rundown of live music events and am currently working on a family-friendly event guide.
💎 I’m researching a story around the missing Bass Coast Shire mayoral chains. It’s been estimated this mayoral necklace was worth $50,000, but there’s still so much unknown about when exactly the chains went missing. And who took them? And … what does one do with stolen local government accoutrement?
If you have any information on the chains or the story behind them, I’d love to hear from you. Send me an email at [email protected]
🐨 Sunday (September 7) is Threatened Species Day across Australia. The day aims to inform about native species and ecosystems that are endangered, or under threat of extinction. It commemorates the day the last known thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) died, in 1936.
There are so many incredible native species in Gippsland, and yesterday I made a video about efforts to protect local Strzelecki koala habitat. Check it out below.
🌊 Over the weekend I was in Perth catching up with family and attending a mate’s wedding. I luckily avoided some of the wild Victorian weather and made the most of the Western Australian sunshine. Here’s a picture I took during a run along Cottesloe beach one afternoon.

🎤 I took to the streets of Warragul with my microphone to ask locals what the most difficult thing was about living in Gippsland. Take a look at the video I made below and if you have an opinion please leave a comment.

👂 HEARD THIS WEEK ✍️

A petition with 3,138 signatures has failed to sway Baw Baw Shire councillors, who will press on with an attempt to have the state government take responsibility for maintaining 50km of remote roads around Walhalla.
Former councillor and owner of the Walhalla Star Hotel, Michael Leaney, fronted council with what he claimed was the largest petition in the shire's history.
The petition argued for council to retain control of two sections of Walhalla road north of the township, from Walhalla to Beardmores and from Aberfeldy to Matlock.
